Issue: Raise The Profile Of The UK Youth Parliament

~ image copyright UK Youth Parliament

If elected onto the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP), as a Member of the Youth Parliament (MYP) one of the things which I would like to see improved is the profile of the UKYP, the majority of people have never heard of it or the work in which it does for them.

At present, there is very little known  about the UKYP and the work that it does for people aged 11 to 18, in the local area.

This leaves a large proportion of young people unable to raise any issues they have with the UKYP, this also makes it an even bigger problem when it comes to the election of there local UKYP member, because they don't have much of an idea what they are voting for or why.

The way I would go about in raising the profile of the UK Youth Parliament in the local area, would be to keep people informed with what is going on, as well as what I have been up to in a regular newsletter.

I would also look to keep people up to date with what was going on through other forms of media such as local newspapers, social networking sites such as facebook and twitter, school assembles as well as from my website: www.adam4myp.com

If you have not voted yet there is still time. Vote by either:

  • Texting: 'vote adam'

Mailbox: Doing best for young

Mailbox: Doing best for young

~ A letter that was featured in the Burton Mail, dated Monday, February 1st, 2010, following the article about my UKYP campaign: Leisure key to teen campaign You can also find out about the lack of things to do in Burton in my recent article:  Issue: lack of things to do

It was good to read Burton schoolboy Adam Clarke, in the Burton Mail, taking an active interest in his local surroundings and his ambition to become elected to the UK Youth Parliament.

Young people are the country's future and will be responsible for shaping our communities over time.

As borough councillors, it is important that we engage actively with young people, to help shape our services particularly in leisure over the coming years.

As deputy leaders responsible for leisure and youth engagement, we are particularly interested in Adam's comments about the lack of leisure attractions.

The council does, in fact, offer many and varied activities for young people to get involved in through the Brewhouse arts centre, Shobnall Leisure Centre, and the town's extensive areas of open space.

Once complete, the refurbished leisure centre will offer greatly improved facilities better aligned to the needs of our residents, including young people.

We would be keen to meet with Adam at any time in order to better understand his concerns, and discuss anything he feels would possibly improve how we promote and advertise our services.

Liz Staples, deputy leader for partnerships and youth engagement
Bernard Peters, deputy leader for environment and leisure

Issue: Lack Of Things To Do

Issue: Lack Of Things To Do
~ Image copyright Burton Mail

In Burton there is very little which young people can take part in and have fun. With the closure of the Burton Bowling Alley at Bargates, and also the recent closure of the Meadowside for refurbishment, this has left people in Burton with hardly anything which they can do in there own time. Especially young people because they restricted by means in which to travel, such as a car.

This only leaves the cinema and hanging around town as a valid option for which young people can do. This, however, not only leaves a poor choice of facilities in the area, but also is not a suitable option every weekend, as the cost of going to the cinema soon adds up.

There is also clearly, a demand for a bowling alley in Burton, as well as other new facilities in which people can take part in, and this demand is shown by a Facebook group alone, called 'we want a bowling alley in Burton!' which has attracted over 5,000 members to its cause.

What I propose is to see a range of new facilities in Burton, which people can take part in after school, at weekends and in the school holidays.

These type of facilities would include things such as a bowling alley, more youth club provisions, an Ice Rink, Roller skating, laser quest, a Live music venue, more under 18 clubs (e.g UBA) or even just more places to hang out.

If elected onto the UK Youth Parliament I will actively campaign to see the introduction of such facilities in Burton and the surrounding areas to make the lives of young people more fun and to benefit them.

If you have not voted yet there is still time. Vote by either:

  • Texting: 'vote adam'

First press release: Leisure key to teen campaign

First press release: Leisure key to teen campaign.

~ Taken from the Burton Mail, Story First Published: 18/01/2010 09:38:54, Original

by RICHARD CASTLE

A BURTON schoolboy will campaign to improve the town’s 'boring' leisure facilities if elected to the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP).

Adam Clarke, a pupil at Abbot Beyne School, in Winshill, is running in the forum's 2010 elections.

The 15-year-old, who has stood in the elections for the past two years, is hoping it will be 'third time lucky'.

Adam, of Branston, said he was inspired to stand for the UKYP after being bullied at school.

He said: “I’d always thought about going into politics but, when I was in Year Seven, I used to get bullied and that convinced me I needed to be in a position to stand up for people who need help.

“I want the ability to make changes and make a real difference to young people’s lives, with one of my priorities being to tackle bullying."

Adam, who lives with his father Lee, mother Suzanne and younger sisters Natalie and Sophie, says he is 'constantly frustrated' by Burton’s lack of leisure attractions.

The Newman Drive resident said: “Growing up near town, it really brings it home how little there is for young people to do in Burton.

“The problem’s been made a lot worse by the closure of the bowling alley and now the Meadowside is also closed for refurbishment.

“If elected, I can lobby councils and the Government to improve things and one of my top priorities will be to make Burton a better place for young people.

Adam has been an 'active member' of the UK Youth Action Council for the last year and says his experience makes him a 'strong candidate'.

He is also aiming to 'improve the negative image' of young people and put pressure on the Government to reduce or abolish university tuition fees and provide cheaper transport for under-18s.

Adam said: “Being an MP is ultimately what I want to do with my life. I want to be in a place where I can really affect change.”

MYP voting starts on Saturday, January 23, and ends on Friday, February 5. Anyone wanting to vote for Adam can do so online at www.speakoutonline.com or by texting 'vote Adam' to 60003.

Election Statement

Election Statement

Hi, my name is Adam Clarke, I'm 15 and I currently go to Abbot Beyne school.

I'm seeking your support in the up and coming 2010 United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) elections, in Staffordshire, east division.  The UKYP is Your chance to be heard and represented with your views, issues and opinions all being taken into account.

This is your chance to have your say on what really matters to you.

Having ran in the UKYP elections for the past two years and spent the past 12 months as an active member of the Youth Action Kouncil (YAK) attending regular  meetings and also helping to plan and participate in the Speakout Conference, in particular the transport workshop, which was attended by over 200 young people.

As well as taking an active role in YAK and the Speakout Conference, I have also been a part of the recently set up YouFind.me.uk website, that aims to tell the youth of Staffordshire, local activities which they can be a part of, by being on the team of young people tasked with the promotion and development of youfind.

This has all helped me to gain valuable experience, a wealth of  knowledge and confidence, needed in representing young people in Staffordshire and at a national level to put their ideas, views and opinions forward, which also puts me as one of the most experienced candidates in the east division.

Because of this, I have spent a long time in gaining the views of young people in Burton finding out what they actually want, and not what they are being told they want. One of the major issues in Burton is the lack of things to do, and with the closure of the bowling alley and swimming pool, this situation has become worse, leaving us bored with nothing to do.

Some of the issues which I would be campaigning for if I'm elected onto the UK Youth Parliament would be:

  • Improve the facilities in the local area and the lack of things to do
  • A crackdown on bullying and cyber-bullying
  • Improved support for victims of bullying
  • Better support and information for people in year 11, making the transition to post-16 education.
  • To improve the negative image of young people
  • Raise the profile of the UK Youth Parliament in the local area
  • Tuition fees at universities reduced or abolished
  • The introduction of a Youth Discount Card for all 11-18's in full time education
  • Cheaper transport for young people

I really hope that you can give me the opportunity in representing your views as a Member of the UK Youth Parliament (MYP). If you vote for me I will do my best and up most in campaigning for you and your views at a local, regional and national level, taking it to the uppermost levels for the young people in Burton, Tamworth and Uttoxeter.

~ Adam
